Human Rights on the Hill

The "Hill Working Group" was established in 2005 to help IHRFG members better understand what is happening in Congress and more broadly in Washington with respect to human rights.  The first meeting was held in April of 2006.  For an agenda of the meeting as well as the meeting report, please login into the funders only area below.  The briefings have been modeled on the highly successful Hill briefings mounted by the Peace and Security Funders Group.

With the beginning of the 108th Congress and the Bush Administration's new controversial appointments, IHRFG members identified the need to focus on human rights and US policy.   Each year the Congress takes up legislation and judicial appointments impacting human rights work (domestic and international). This Washington Briefing series offers IHRFG members a unique opportunity to learn first hand about human rights-related efforts on Capitol Hill, including the work of the Congressional Human Rights Caucus and to explore, face-to-face with policymakers pressing human rights issues, funding priorities and the vital role the human rights community plays in our society and around the world. This is also an important opportunity for a strategic dialog between funders, policymakers, grantees and Members of Congress about the impact of philanthropy on reducing conflict and redressing human rights violations at home and abroad.
