Human Rights and the EnvironmentEnvironmental degradation is increasing rapidly across the world, and at a terrible human cost. Economic globalization and increased consumerism in both rich and developing countries, with their demand for ever more materials, ever more energy, ever more imported food, create devastation in the wake of extractive industry, industrial agriculture, polluting manufacturing, and giant dams. And the cost comes in the lives of the most vulnerable people, who pay with their health, their lost livelihoods, their farms, forests and fisheries, sometimes their homes and sometimes their very lives. Increasingly environmental and human rights funders are coming to understand that they can strengthen each other's work. The UN Charter proclaims the rights to a home, to a clean environment, to earning a living, to health, and to the use for indigenous people of their traditional lands, and that fact creates a powerful way for environmental activists to make their case.
