| Description | Astraea is committed to funding groups, projects, or organizations that are led by and for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgendered (LGBT) communities that directly address oppression based on sexual orientation and sexual identity. Organizations should also have the capacity for addressing interrelated forms of oppression including oppression based on gender, class, race, ethnicity, age, physical and mental ability, national identity and religious affiliation.
As a result of Astraea’s emphasis on funding groups that are committed to social change, the majority of Astraea’s grantees are lesbian organizations and LGBT organizations, or progressive organizations that have LGBT's in leadership roles and include LGBT issues as an integral part of their work. We also fund gay men and transgendered groups that fulfill the above criteria. Through advocacy and education, groups are working to fight homophobia, and to promote human rights for LGBT’s in their home countries, as well as providing social and cultural spaces for LGBT’s to come out and to express their individuality. Astraea funds such issues as anti-violence, health, culture, economic justice, anti-homophobia, advocacy, leadership development and empowerment services. Astraea prioritizes funding to groups that have the least access to traditional funding.
